Attempts / classification lens

Twelve marks, three meanings.

The stroke count looks simple. The boundary between on target, off target and blocked depends on whose event definitions are being used.

The classification tally

Illustration 02 / Team A attempts
On target4

Includes 1 goal; the other 3 stand for saves or qualifying last-line interventions.

Off target5

Includes 1 attempt that hit the woodwork and did not enter the goal.

Blocked3

Defender blocks with a goalkeeper or other defender still behind the blocker.

Recorded

Under this Opta-style illustration, a non-goal woodwork attempt is off target. A last-line block can be on target; a block with someone still behind the defender is counted separately here. The denominator is all 12 classified Team A attempts in this invented set.

Still unknown

Another provider may classify or total attempts differently. We do not know shot locations, Team B attempts or a real collector’s revisions. Do not apply this partition as a universal total-shots definition.
